Laser Acne Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a very popular, if not profitable industry. There are many cosmetic surgeons in the Chicago area alone. But is cosmetic surgery really the answer if someone suffers from acne?
Professionals say yes, but only in extreme cases of acne.
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) says that laser treatment may be suggested by a doctor to treat acne scars. The best advice that NIAMS offers is to treat the acne problem early before it becomes serious.
Laser treatment, Dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, or other procedures may be done by a doctor to treat serious acne scars. Acne occurs when skin pores become clogged. Whiteheads, blackheads, inflammation, or cysts may result in dirty skin. Though acne is typical in teenagers, they can also occur among infants and people in their 30s and 40s. Additionally, people can get acne in places other than their face. Shoulders, arms, trunk, legs, and posterior may also experience acne.
The best solution to acne before considering laser surgery is to keep your skin clean. Washing your skin with a mild soap and using shampoo to wash the oil from your scalp can be the first line of defense against acne. If acne still persists, oral medication, antibiotics, or skin cream may be perscribed to treat
acne. Laser acne surgery recommended by a doctor should only be done as a last resort to treat acne or if scars form on your body. For cases of infant acne, a pediatrician should be consulted for proper care.
In laser treatment for acne, a pulsed dye laser is used with a local anesthetic along with an anesthetic cream, intralesional injections, or nerve blocks. Outpatients are given adjacent, nonoverlapping laser pulses over the acne scars. Side effects may include purplish skin coloring. The acne patient is then
evaluated six to eight weeks later. The next step might be another treatment with the laser at the same or slightly higher wavelength.
If laser acne surgery was recommended as a treatment, Dermatologists have reported a significant success rate in treating acne scars with lasers. In 1997, Dr. Tina Alster reported a 57% to 83% improvement in patients receiving pulsed dye laser treatment for acne scars. This success was seen in patients who had only one or two treatments with the dye laser. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis with local, not general, anesthesia. Dr. Alster works at the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and Georgetown University and spoke about the procedure's success during a 1997
meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
The best perscription for acne prevention is clean skin. However, if an acne problem persists, medicine or cream should be used before running to the local laser treatment center for help. The most recognized cosmetic surgeon in the Chicago area is Dr. Leon Forrester Tcheupdjian, M.D. Dr. Tcheupdjian and his partner Dr. David Ross have practiced cosmetic surgery in the Chicago area since 1981. Drs. Tcheupdjian and Ross have facilities in four (affluent) cities: Chicago's Gold Coast community, Arlington Heights, Oak Brook Terrace, and Naperville.
