What Makes Us Different: The Multiple Employer Plan (MEP)

Most small businesses that offer a 401(k) do it on their own, which means they're responsible for plan administration, compliance filings, investment selection, and all the fiduciary liability that comes with it. It's a significant burden, and it's why many employers don't offer one at all.

SPLI's 401(k) changes all that with its Multiple Employer Plan (MEP).

Instead of sponsoring your own standalone plan, your company joins our shared plan structure. You get the purchasing power, the investment options, and the compliance infrastructure of a large employer. All you have to do is communicate the benefit to your team.

The result? A competitive retirement benefit program your employees will value at a cost that'll surprise you.

Numbers That Speak for Themselves

Because SPLI's 401(k) operates as a MEP, administrative costs are shared across all participating employers. That shared structure is what makes our pricing possible and what makes the comparison below so striking.

Contribution Options for Every Situation

SPLI's 401(k) program supports multiple contribution types, so employees can save in the way that makes the most sense for their financial situation, and employers can structure matching in a way that fits their budget and goals.

Option 01

Traditional 401(k)

Employees contribute pre-tax dollars, reducing their taxable income today. Taxes are paid when funds are withdrawn in retirement. This is the most common contribution type.

Option 02

Roth 401(k)

Employees contribute after-tax dollars. Withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. A strong option for employees who expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in their career.

Option 03

Safe Harbor

An employer match structure that automatically satisfies IRS non-discrimination testing. Simplifies compliance and is often the right choice for companies that want to maximize owner contributions.

Who Can Participate?

For Employers

Any active SPLI PEO client is eligible to offer the 401(k) program, regardless of the company employee size.

However, the program must be offered to all eligible employees. It cannot be limited to select individuals or job classes.

For Employees

IRS eligibility requirements apply:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Service requirement: employees may be eligible upon hire (employer may require up to one year of service)

Vesting schedules are determined by the employer's chosen match structure and are reviewed during the plan design consultation.
